Hybrid storyboards combine 2D and 3D elements inside 3D sets. Using Blender and its Grease Pencil tool, the scenes are edited and timed out with fully-animated cameras, objects and drawings.
The reel to the left shows a selection of work that I did from 2010 to 2016, before becoming a Sr Story Artist at Blue Sky Studios. At that time, we called what we were doing 'story animatics'. I used several applications to create these short sequences, mostly After Effects, Photoshop and Cinema 4D.
Today, this approach is called 'hybrid storyboarding' or 'story-vis' for its combination of storyboard and pre-vis. It's come a long way since 2016 as I got to experience in 2025 when I worked on the new Netflix animated series, Magic: The Gathering season 1. The show is boarded almost entirely in this hybrid workflow. It's based in just one incredible app now, Blender.
Exploring this new method of storytelling is my current passion. I can't show my work from Magic yet, so I'm busy creating new pieces to showcase this work. I will update this space soon!
