Hybrid storyboards combine 2D and 3D elements inside 3D sets. Using Blender and its Grease Pencil tool, the scenes are edited and timed out with fully-animated cameras, objects and drawings.

The reel to the left shows a selection of work that I did from 2010 to 2016, before becoming a Sr Story Artist at Blue Sky Studios. At that time, we called what we were doing 'story animatics'. I used several applications to create these short sequences, mostly After Effects, Photoshop and Cinema 4D.

Today, this approach is called 'hybrid storyboarding' or 'story-vis' for its combination of storyboard and pre-vis. It's come a long way since 2016 as I got to experience in 2025 when I worked on the new Netflix animated series, Magic: The Gathering season 1. The show is boarded almost entirely in this hybrid workflow. It's based in just one incredible app now, Blender.

Exploring this new method of storytelling is my current passion. I can't show my work from Magic yet, so I'm busy creating new pieces to showcase this work. I will update this space soon!

I'm a story artist/storyboard artist with 20+ years in the animation industry. With every new project I keep finding new directions, making new discoveries, and pushing into the latest technical processes, while bringing the artistic sensibility and craft that only experience can give.

My career has taken me from Blue Sky Studios to Illumination/Universal to Netflix Animation, where I helped bring Magic: The Gathering to life as a brand-new streaming series, premiering 2027. My credits include The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, currently the highest-grossing animated film in the world, with Angry Birds 3 still on the way. Most recently I've been working under contract on a new animated feature at Annapurna Pictures.

Based in the New York Metropolitan area, I specialize in cinematic staging, dynamic camera direction, and character performance. Before moving into story, I spent twelve years as a traditional character animator and 2D generalist, and that foundation still shapes everything I do.

What drives me is the relentless pursuit of the next idea, the next technique, the next way to tell a story that nobody's tried before. I'm a polymath by nature. Right now I'm deep into using Blender to create dynamic hybrid 2D/3D storyboards, and I've been expanding from animated family films into darker, older-skewing work in science fiction and fantasy. These are genres I've loved my whole life, and getting to work in them has genuinely lit a fire. Animation rewards people who never stop learning, and I never do.
